The strike paralyzes Haiti’s judicial system

The strike was announced by the Association of Permanent Judges of Haiti, which condemned the failure to comply with the commitments made by the authorities to put an end to what it considers to be discrimination in terms of salaries and social benefits between ordinary judges and practicing judges. .

The authority reported that judges receive debit cards equal to a third of their salaries, service bonuses equal to half their monthly fees, fuel vouchers worth sixteen thousand gourdes (about $120), prepaid phones and other subsidies.

For several years, the union has been carrying out long strikes to demand decent working conditions. In March of this year, the judicial system was completely paralyzed due to a strike by bailiffs and court clerks.

This move disrupted the work of the courts in all eighteen jurisdictions and caused serious harm to the litigants.

Then Judge Jean-Claude asked the government to take the necessary measures to meet the demands of the bailiffs and secretaries and considered their demands for fair salaries.

The new strike comes a month after the beginning of the judicial year and shortly after the authorities launched a program to reduce the lengthy pretrial detention that affects eight out of every 10 prisoners.
