Planet Zoo 2 Trailer Reveals Frontier’s Most Ambitious Zoo Simulation Yet

Frontier Developments has offered players a closer look at Planet Zoo 2, the long-awaited sequel to its acclaimed wildlife management simulator. Ahead of the game’s launch this October, the studio has unveiled new gameplay features, enhanced animal behaviour systems and major technical upgrades designed to make the experience more immersive than ever.

More than six years after the original Planet Zoo became a favourite among simulation fans, the sequel promises expanded conservation mechanics, advanced habitat design tools and, for the first time, fully aquatic and flying animals.

Wildlife and Animal Behaviour Receive a Major Upgrade

One of the standout moments in the announcement trailer is the appearance of the Sumatran Tiger, which Frontier has positioned as a flagship species for the sequel. The studio says the animals have been rebuilt with far greater visual detail, from realistic fur textures to more expressive movement and sound design.

The trailer also introduces a new behavioural system designed to make animals react dynamically to their surroundings. Animals will display visible changes in mood and activity depending on habitat quality and welfare conditions. For example, a tiger may appear lethargic or withdrawn if its enclosure is poorly managed, giving players clearer visual feedback about animal wellbeing.

Frontier says the aim is to make every species feel more authentic and lifelike. That attention to realism is particularly noticeable in the Western Chimpanzee, a returning fan favourite from the first game.

Improved Climbing and Social Behaviour

Chimpanzees in Planet Zoo 2 feature upgraded climbing systems, improved brachiation and more fluid jumping animations. They can also interact with climbing structures in more natural ways, including resting and sleeping above ground.

The trailer also hints at an expanded cohabitation system, allowing different species to share habitats more meaningfully. While Frontier has yet to reveal full details, the feature is expected to play a larger role in zoo management and animal welfare.

More Dynamic Habitats and Environmental Systems

Habitat creation appears to have been significantly expanded, with players able to design more naturalistic enclosures using a broader range of scenery pieces and themes.

One sequence shows Plains Zebras roaming through an enclosure beneath a custom-built guest walkway, highlighting the flexibility of the building tools. Frontier says four entirely new scenery themes will be revealed in the coming months.

Water simulation has also received a substantial overhaul. In Planet Zoo 2, water reacts dynamically to animal movement, with ripples and waves generated in real time. The trailer demonstrates this with Saltwater Crocodiles moving through pools and basking on raised wooden platforms.

Aquariums and Aviaries Introduced for the First Time

Perhaps the biggest addition to the sequel is the introduction of aquariums and aviaries, enabling fully aquatic and flying species to appear in the series for the first time.

According to Frontier, these systems have been in development since the beginning of the project and represent one of the game’s biggest technical achievements. Fish and birds now use full 3D navigation systems, allowing for more natural movement within enclosures.

New Aquatic Species Take Centre Stage

Among the newly revealed aquatic animals is the Hawksbill Turtle, a critically endangered species recreated in detailed underwater environments. The trailer also briefly showcases the Ocean Sunfish, one of the largest bony fish in the world, alongside schools of smaller marine species.

Aquariums are fully customisable, allowing players to design large-scale underwater habitats in much the same way as terrestrial exhibits.

Walkthrough Aviaries Add Immersion

Flying animals are another major focus of the sequel. The trailer introduces Toco Toucans housed inside expansive aviaries, where birds can perch naturally throughout the environment.

Frontier says aviaries can also be designed as walkthrough exhibits, allowing visitors to move through enclosed habitats where appropriate. The structures are generated using modular walls and support systems, giving players greater flexibility when designing their zoos.

The studio has stressed that realism remains central to development across all species, with animation, behaviour and sound design receiving significant attention.

Greater Emphasis on Conservation and Zoo Management

Beyond visual improvements, Planet Zoo 2 places a stronger emphasis on conservation and long-term management.

Players will need to create habitats that accurately reflect each species’ natural environment while also maintaining visitor satisfaction and staff morale. Well-designed enclosures are expected to improve guest education, increase zoo ratings and generate the revenue needed for expansion.

A new global conservation system will also allow players to participate in wildlife restoration projects. Animals bred in captivity can be released into wildlife reserves around the world as part of broader conservation efforts.

Frontier says more details about these systems will be shared closer to launch.

Release Date, Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses

Players who pre-order Planet Zoo 2 will receive a Bonus Content Pack featuring decorative zoo items including the Toucan Eat Shop and Signage set, themed donation bins and a Tiger Photo Stand-In Wall.

The Deluxe Edition includes six additional animal species and exclusive decorative signs aimed at players looking to expand their conservation parks further.

Planet Zoo 2 launches on 13 October for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Standard Edition will retail at £39.99 in the UK, while the Deluxe Edition will be priced at £54.99.

With expanded simulation systems, deeper conservation mechanics and the arrival of aquatic and flying animals, Frontier appears to be positioning Planet Zoo 2 as a significant step forward for the long-running management series.
