Senate debates electoral reform for AMLO and Morena

This afternoon, the plenary session of the Senate discussed the electoral reform promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador y Morena.

Before the official start of debate, dissenting senators put forward three motions to suspend it, but their motions were rejected by the majority consisting of Morena and her allies.

The reform consisted of two opinions: one with changes in four electoral laws and the other with changes in the laws on social contact and administrative responsibilities.

Both documents will be discussed separately in a session that is expected to last until dawn.

Morena’s bloc maintains that reform seeks to make elections cheaper and more efficient. The opposition points out that the proposal will affect the functioning of a properly functioning system.

They ask to postpone the discussion of reform

Beatriz Paredes, Senator for the PRI, since noon Request to remove this item from the agenda. He was supported by Dante Delgado, of the MC, and Germán Martínez, of Grupo Plural, but the approach did not work out.

Alejandro Armenta, president of the senate and Morena member, said the petition should be lifted in exchange for suspensive motions, which would be read until after the corresponding opinions were submitted.

The discussion is expected to last for several hours.

Among other points, the reform proposes that the NIE’s 300 constituency councils become temporary, that the institute’s executive secretary have fewer powers, that federal election processes begin not in September but in November of the year before the election and that statements by officials are not considered government propaganda. .

The reform has already been approved by the House of Representatives with the votes of Morena and her CWP allies. However, in the Senate, he met not only resistance from the opposition, but also suspicion among the Morena privy benches.

Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of the parliamentary group, has said several times in recent days that the package of amendments needs to be “cleaned up”, because it includes unconstitutional aspects.

When asked if the position distanced him further from President López Obrador, Monreal – the presidential candidate – replied that he was “on the side of the constitution”.
