PORT-AU-PRINCE, Aug 23 (RHC) Haiti’s Senate President Joseph Lambert on Tuesday denounced the shooting of five people by police during protests in Jacmel, in the southeast of the country.

Jeff Timoty, Jude Desier, Ardan Sauveur, Continent Darley and Dennis Lane, are the five young people who had been mobilizing peacefully before being shot by law enforcement, criticizing the parliamentarian in a Twitter message and expressing their solidarity with the struggle of the residents.

This Tuesday, for the second day in a row, hundreds of citizens demonstrated against hunger, poverty and insecurity, especially in provincial cities such as Jacmel, Miraguán and Grande Goaves.

The protests condemned the high cost of living and the rise of armed gangs that kill and kidnap with impunity, while criticizing the administration of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who celebrated a year in power last July.

In other cities like Les Cayes, activities have been paralyzed and in Port-au-Prince, defectors have set up barricades of burning tires on some of the arteries.

Political and social organizations in recent weeks have called for a public mobilization against insecurity and condemnation of inflation, which has exceeded 29 percent, the highest rate in a decade.

This situation has led to high prices for food and other essential supplies, to which is added the already chronic shortage of fuel.

Experts point out that as long as the insecurity crisis, responsible for more than 500 murders since April, continues, it will not be possible to contemplate an economic recovery. (Line: latin press).
