Power outages in South Africa drive up the cost of living

As South Africa’s Minister of Electricity, Deputy President, Kgosincho Ramokgopa, stated today, daily power outages affect, among other sectors of the population, the majority of farmers.

The minister explained that they therefore need to invest a lot of money in production that requires uninterrupted electricity supply.

He spoke after the meeting in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg. Ramokgopa, a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress, of which he is a member, added that the proportion of income spent by the poor on the basic food basket is disproportionate compared to the proportion of people with middle and high incomes.

He stressed that this means that power outages have a much greater impact on the country’s poor, which is why they suffer from it more than anyone else.

He added that to solve the national energy problem, there are several ways that have already been identified and are being implemented with practical measures, the first of which is increasing electricity generation by the National Generation Company “Eskom,” “in accordance with the action plan that has been drawn up.” “It was revealed by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July last year.”
