New outbreaks of avian influenza detected in Chile

The entity, subject to the Department of Agriculture, confirmed the presence of the highly pathogenic H5N1 variant in the facilities of Avícola Chequén, which is installed in the municipality of Florida, and whose main business is egg production.

At this place, all necessary tests will be carried out to detect any possible infection for the employees who work there.

The disease, which mainly affects migratory birds and some mammals, was first detected in northern Chile in December last year and quickly spread to almost the entire national territory.

And the first case of infection with the virus in a person, and the only one so far, occurred at the end of March, despite the health authorities confirming that no one else around them was infected.

Today, the University of Talca, located in the capital of the Maule region, has suspended all its activities after several samples of dead birds were discovered in its botanical garden, which raised suspicions of a concentration in the place.

SAG staff went to the site to collect samples and perform the corresponding analyses, which should be ready within 48 hours.

The management of the Graduate Studies Center decided to boycott classes and any other assignment until next Monday.

Authorities from the Governors of Health and Agriculture insist the population not to handle any animal or dead animal showing symptoms of avian influenza and to give immediate notice in order to adopt basic sanitary measures.
