2009 – Mercedes Sosa

Died in Buenos Aires, at the age of 74, singer “The Voice of Latin America”, one of the most important artists of Argentine and Latin American folk music. It won the 1994 Martín Fierro Award for Best TV Show, the 1995 Konex de Brillante and several Grammy Awards.

1965 – Fidel Nadal

Born in Buenos Aires, musician and singer Fidel Nadal, who led the rock, punk and reggae band Todos Tos Myrtos in the 1980s.


1992 – Diego a Maradona

Under the technical guidance of Carlos Bilardo, Diego Armando Maradona made his Seville debut after serving a 15-month doping ban when he played for Napoli. In the match, Seville lost 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao. Thus, the Argentine star was directed by Bilardo, his coach in the Argentine national team who was champion in Mexico 1986 and runner-up in Italy 90.


1917 – Violet Barra

Singer and composer Violetta Parra (Violetta del Carmen Barra Sandoval), one of the most important and popular Latin American folk artists for her poetry and social commitment, was born in the Chilean city of San Fabian de Alico.

1955 – Jorge Valdano

Former footballer and former coach Jorge Valdano was born in the city of Santa Fe Las Barigas, the striker of the Argentine national team that won the World Cup in Mexico 86. He appeared at Newell’s Old Boys and starred in Real Madrid, from which he was also the technical director and sporting director. He was also the coach of the Spanish national teams Tenerife and Valencia.

1970 – Janis Joplin

American singer Janis Joplin, famous for the power and intensity of her voice and one of the most important rock and blues artists of her time, has died in Los Angeles (California, USA), at the age of 27. It is part of the “27 Club”, as the group of famous artists who died at the age of 27 are called, such as Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, among others.

1975 – Babe Peony

At the age of 66, famous actor and comedian José “Pepe” Biondi, one of the greatest capocums of Argentine television, has died in Buenos Aires. He was distinguished by his innocent and clowning sense of humor.

1961 – Silvina Gar

Born in Santa Fe, Rosario, singer-songwriter Silvina Gary is one of the most important female voices of Argentine pop and rock and a benchmark for the musical movement Trova Rosarina.

2020 – Animal Day

World Animal Day, declared by the World Animal Protection Organization in 1929 to raise awareness of animal rights and protection, is celebrated.
