UNESCO has registered 64 items in the Memory of the World

It was established in this capital, in the context of the 216th session of the Executive Council of the multilateral entity, the forum that culminated on Wednesday.

The Memory of the World Program has reached 494 recordings since its inception in 1992 to prevent the irreversible loss of humanity’s documentary heritage, which includes items on paper, digital, audiovisual or other format, and to promote access to it.

In this regard, the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, called these groups an essential part of our collective history.

He stressed that “documentary heritage is a common memory of humanity and must be protected for research purposes and shared with as many people as possible.”

Among the 64 new items incorporated into the Executive Board’s 216th session, Latin America and the Caribbean Feminism, Science and Politics – Legacy of Bertha Lutz (Brazil), Cuban Film Poster Collection and City Minutes stand out. The region’s contribution to the memory of the world is complemented by the photographic archives of El Popular newspaper (Uruguay), negatives on glass plates (Peru) and the record of the identification of slaves in former French colonies (Haiti and France).

Groups also registered, among other countries, Algeria, Canada, China, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Iran, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.
