UK sets date for autonomous vehicle – traffic

The British government expects public transport and goods to be fully independent by 2025.

UK roads will receive fully self-driving vehicles by 2025, according to a new Johnson government project that plans to allocate £100m to the initiative. Of those, 34 of those will be dedicated to safety research, which will address issues such as their performance in adverse weather conditions or their interaction with pedestrians, other vehicles and cyclists.

The plan states that some vehicles with self-driving functions could be on highways as soon as next year, and that new legislation will be developed to allow a wider and safer deployment of self-driving vehicles by 2025.

The Secretary of State for Transportation, Grant Shapps, stated that the end is that “The UK is at the forefront of developing and using this remarkable technology. That’s why we invest millions in critical security research and put in place legislation to ensure we get all the benefits this technology promises.“.

Partially independent, next year

The British government believes that self-driving vehicles could revolutionize public transport and passenger travel, especially for those who don’t drive, as well as better connect rural communities and reduce crashes caused by human error. Later, they can provide personalized, on-demand connections from rural towns and villages to nearby public transportation options.
