The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports the biosphere reserve proposal

He explained that local communities in two of the municipalities located on that border met with six indigenous reserves, four community councils, two mayors’ offices, the Chocó government, and the regional environmental authority “to be able to have a new vision for sustainable development in a region” for everyone to see. “It’s a fairly difficult area.”

The Darien Region, also known as the Darien Forest or the Jungle, includes the Panamanian province of that name, the regions of Guna Yala, Embra, Wunan, Guna de Madungandi and Wargandi, and the provinces of Chimane and Chibo.

It also includes the northern Colombian department of Chocó, known worldwide for its rich biodiversity and uniqueness as it has one of the highest levels of endemism in the so-called Neotropics.

This is the result of natural dynamics that have operated for millions of years, and is the product of the interaction of cultures that have lived in close relationship with their ecosystems for thousands of years.

Biosphere reserves are one of the pillars of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Agency’s mandate, and each one promotes innovative local solutions, in order to conserve biodiversity, conserve ecosystems and address climate change, while improving people’s livelihoods.

The International Coordination Board of the Man and the Biosphere Program is the governing body of the Program responsible for decision-making on these additions, and is composed of 34 Member States.
