Panama hosts the regional forum on the rise of illegal immigration

According to an official note, Foreign Minister Janina Tiwani will preside over the opening of the forum, which will be held behind closed doors, and will issue a statement at the end.

The text specifies that this event will serve as an appeal to conscience, given the irreparable ecological damage being done to Darien National Park, caused by the uncontrolled traffic of thousands of walkers who, in their desperate crossing, leave a devastated and ruined road. It was revealed that the diplomat, concerned about this great natural reservoir, which is home to thousands of indigenous Panamanians and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, called this meeting to protect and provide protection for those lands.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also specifies in its invitation that one of the other problems and the focus of the meeting will be the misleading message of organized crime, which is trying, using social networks, to stimulate immigration with false success stories.

In this sense, it will be proposed to governments, through their social communication channels, to provide in a coordinated manner more responsible and honest information regarding the real risks posed by increasingly dangerous irregular migration.

Recently, the Panamanian Minister of Security, Juan Manuel Pino, warned of the growth of illegal immigration on its way to the United States, in unprecedented numbers.

According to Benno, more than 2,500 people enter the isthmus daily, on average, from the south of the region.

For its part, the National Migration Service (SNM) indicated in a report that as of last August 17, more than 294,000 people, five percent of whom were minors, had crossed the dangerous forest, a much higher number than the 248,000 who did so. In the whole of last year and 133 thousand and 726 for the year 2021.

In the early days of August alone, more than 42,000 people used this overland route, prompting the Panamanian authorities to ensure that if the trend continues by the end of the year, more than 400,000 irregular migrants will cross the Darien Gap.

The Government of Panama retains the interim presidency of the Conference on Migration (CRM), and Peru holds the interim presidency of the South American Conference on Migration (CSM).

The Regional Migration Mechanism is an intergovernmental forum established in 1996 to support dialogue and exchange of ideas, as well as experiences for joint reflection and cooperation on migration issues of common interest to participating countries.

Meanwhile, the RCM is a regional consultative process established by South American countries 20 years ago, with the aim of achieving a regional migration policy, to discuss ideas and exchange good practices.
