Palestinian Authority President calls on Israeli Foreign Minister to resume dialogue

Al-Sheikh highlighted, via his Twitter account, his meeting last night with the head of Israeli diplomacy, the second meeting between politicians in less than two months.

During the meeting, the official stressed the importance of stopping the unilateral Israeli measures that prevent reaching a solution.

Both of them had already made contact on Jan. 23 to discuss these issues and bilateral relations.

Last December, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met Defense Minister Benny Gantz during a visit to Israel, the first in 12 years.

Despite these contacts, the situation has deteriorated in recent months in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank due to an increase in attacks by Jewish settlers and the Israeli army.

According to the Israeli NGO B’Tselem, Tel Aviv forces killed 313 Palestinians in 2021, including 71 minors, the highest number since 2014.

Added to this is the fact that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has publicly refused to return to the negotiating table or meet with leaders of the Palestinian National Authority.

Bennett and his Yamina party are known for their proximity to settlers, and oppose dialogue or allowing the establishment of a Palestinian state, as demanded by the international community.

Specifically, the day before, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine urged Israel to resume talks with the latter government to achieve a just and equitable peace.

In a meeting on the sidelines of the 157th regular session of the Council of the League of Arab States, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry announced. Ayman Al-Safadi from Jordan and Riyad Al-Malki from Palestine analyzed recent events in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
