La Jornada – Strikes and protests continue in UNAM and Poli . schools

Protest mobilizations and strikes continued on Friday in different schools of both the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Some of them lasted several days, while others were carried out under the pretext of remembering the Borrell attack which took place four years earlier in front of the Rectangle Tower.

At UNAM, one of the first acts of protests – which took place just three weeks before the start of the school year – took place at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, where last Thursday a group of students occupied the administration and the library. He exposed several unconditional demands for a decision on a comprehensive campus strike.

In social networks, the so-called Student Struggle Committee of that school pointed out that the petition includes greater transparency in the exercise of the college budget, the use of public spaces for academic and recreational purposes, a guaranteed budget for field practices and sports activities, as well as the opening of the library, computer rooms and others.

On that Thursday, the College of Philosophy and Letters issued a statement explaining that “a group of people, coming from the assembly and without dialogue, decided to close the administration and the general secretariat, so that officials would spend the rest in the afternoon in the parking lot.” He added that “at around 9:35 a.m. In the evening, its occupants left the college and it was closed with guards on duty inside the facilities.”

On the morning of the second Friday, a group of young people covered their faces I take Secondary Entrance 5, students and teachers are denied entry. A message signed by the “organised students” was published on social media, in which they explained that they occupied the campus for 24 hours “as an act of demonstration, protest, revival and solidarity.”

Yesterday afternoon, students demonstrated at the main entrance to the UNAM office to commemorate the September 3, 2018 Borrell attack.

About thirty people gathered at the site, chanted anti-courage slogans, and organized a rally that ended two hours later without major incidents.

Meanwhile, at the IPN, the so-called Polytechnic Student Coordinator issued a statement asserting that the National School of Biological Sciences community had “discovered acts of corruption” that led to the resignation of the former campus director today, Yadira Rivera Espinosa.

The Foundation confirmed this information and indicated that the Interim Principal of the said school will be Yadira Fonseca Sabater.

Meanwhile, in the Polytechnic Interdisciplinary Professional Unit in Bole, the campus management responded to the petition of students who carried out a 48-hour strike to demand better working conditions at the school.
