Iberdrola will invest 170 million in building a green hydrogen plant in the UK

Madrid, 9 (European press)

Iberdrola will build a huge green hydrogen plant in the port of Felixstowe (England) with an investment of 150 million pounds (170 million euros), a statement said on Tuesday.

The company confirmed that the site will contribute to the decarbonization of the largest shipping port in the United Kingdom. The facility, which will become operational in 2026, will have, in the first phase, the capacity to produce 14,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, which could be doubled in the future.

The terminal will provide hydrogen for the vehicles and machinery used by the port and will be able to fuel up to 1,300 trucks of green hydrogen. It will also be used to feed unpolluted fuel for trains carrying goods to the port.

Likewise, it will have the potential to be used in the production of green ammonia or ethanol, which can provide clean fuels for marine transportation and create opportunities for its export to other international markets.

The project – which will be developed by ScottishPower, a subsidiary of the group in the UK, with Hutchison Ports – is expected to be located on vacant land within the port, with an extension similar to a football field.

Green hydrogen will be produced through an electrolyzer that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity from renewable sources. The port of Felixtowe is located near the offshore wind farms promoted by Iberdrola in the British waters of the North Sea.

The company has already commissioned East Anglia ONE, with 714 MW, in this area and plans to build the East Anglia Hub offshore wind complex, which will bring together three projects with a total installed capacity of 2,900 MW: East Anglia One North, East Anglia Two and East Anglia Three.
