Hutchison Ports Set a target for the three UK ports to achieve net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2035. The Ports Group operates Felixstowe Port, Harwich International and London Themsport.

When commenting on the target, Clemens Cheng, CEO of Hutchison Ports and Managing Director of Hutchison Ports Europesaid that “Hutchison Ports has set short-term, net zero targets in line with the net zero benchmark of the Science Based Targets initiative. We operate in many markets around the world and have set ambitious emissions reduction targets in each region.”

“Our journey has already begun. We are investing in new, more sustainable equipment and the UK will be among the first of our business units to reach the target.”

The Port of Felixstowe commissioned two new 11kV high voltage substations to service the charging infrastructure for its fleet of conventional electric tractors on May 20. Each substation will allow 20 vehicles to be shipped simultaneously at the port’s Trinity Terminal.

The port will receive the next batch of 22 electric tractors in July 2023, with another 24 vehicles arriving in November 2023.

In addition, the port unveiled its first standalone battery-powered trucks which will come with state-of-the-art battery swap facilities. In total, it has plans to purchase 150 electric tractors in the next two years.

To address Scope 2 emissions and ensure sustainable electricity is used to power port equipment, the Port of Felixstowe signed a new agreement in April that ensures all electricity it uses is certified as generated from solar, offshore wind or other renewable sources.
