The first stage of the new Intercontinental Cup will consist of two rounds. In the first, alternately, the champion of Asia or Africa will receive the champion of Oceania. The winners will go on to compete against AFC or CAF representatives.

In the first edition, the AFC or African Confederation team will be determined in the first round by lottery. The organizing rights for that initial encounter will be shared between them, with each playing a match in its home stadium. From then on they will rotate every year.
