Debate in India on teaching the Russian language

This week, the Russian House in the Indian capital hosted a symposium entitled “The Russian Language and Literature in a Changing World: Values ​​and Development Factors,” organized by the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature and the Indian Association of Language Teachers and Educators. Participants in the event discussed the authorities’ initiatives to create online courses, the cinematography of Pushkin’s works and other cultural issues, Russky Mir reported.

The meeting was attended by 50 participants and professors from Indian universities and schools, as well as their Russian colleagues, according to the international media network TV Brics.

The Russian delegation was headed by Advisor to the Russian President Vladimir Tolstoy.

Maharaja Sayajirao University Professor Deepal Dasgupta gave an overview of the Government of India’s initiatives to develop online Russian language courses on the national educational platform Inflibnet.

Meena Bhatnagar, senior lecturer at the Center for Russian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said that the Russian language is taught in 50 educational institutions in India.

Professor Niklasi Suryanarayan, Head of the Department of Slavic and Finno-Ugric Studies at the University of Delhi, shared her experience teaching the language.

Suryanarayan recommended to his colleagues to turn to films based on Russian classics such as Andrei Tarkovsky, Alexei German Jr. and other famous Soviet and Russian filmmakers.

According to the expert, a cinematic text allows students to focus their attention on the nuances of puns and metaphors, which helps them interpret the literary work being studied.

The workshop included presentations by Indian and Russian speakers on the use of high-style vocabulary and the unwarranted use of loanwords in modern Russian, and the characteristics of teaching a language major to students in technical universities.
