“Lipid Emulsions and the Reversal of Cardiotoxicity by Bupivacaine vs. Ropivacaine in a Swine Model” is the title of the award-winning study, written by Raquel Merones, Student at the Faculty of Biology at the Complutense University of Madrid, Elena Vazquez, Predoctoral Researcher, Matilde Zaballos, Head of the Anesthesia Service at the Hospital Gregorio Marañón, Ignacio Fernández and Lucia Rodriguez, physicians from the same service, and Julio Oralo, Marañón Anesthesia Resident.
The study led by Matilde Zaballos compares the effectiveness of an antidote, intralipid, in reversing cardiotoxicity induced by bupivacaine or ropivacaine, two local anesthetics whose toxic actions are associated with extreme severity and difficulty in treatment in clinical practice.
This line of research, with a translational approach, which studies the electrotoxicity and hemodynamic patterns of local anesthetics, has been conducted for several years in the Experimental Surgery Unit of Hospital Gregorio Marañón, thanks to the acquisition of funded research projects.
