An electoral ban is in effect in Panama

The highest body that regulates and supervises consultations specified that the rule applies to all candidates for elected office and parties.

They specified that the measure stipulates a ban on carrying out activities and promoting government programmes.

Telecom Egypt specified that, as of February 3, 2024, the political campaign will officially begin with proselytizing activities for the vote on May 5 of the same year, for a period of 90 days.

Among the prohibitions imposed by the electoral ban, the dissemination of electoral propaganda, paid or donated for or against citizens or parties, as well as convoys and marches, stands out.

They must also refrain from distributing promotional materials and sponsoring events where the party's name and advertisements are used in traditional and digital media.

Article 257 of the Electoral Law states that an election campaign is the set of paid activities undertaken by political parties, pre-candidates and candidates during a certain period, with the aim of attracting support from voters.

While Article 259 stipulates that traditional means of communication are a means of disseminating electoral propaganda: television channels, open and closed, via satellite or microwave, radio stations, the written press and cinema.

It also includes digital media: the digital version of traditional media, the Internet and social networks, accounts or call centers via landline or cell phone, and large digital data centers.

Other expressions with similar restrictions must adhere to static or mobile election propaganda, through promotional articles, social media accounts and content that is sponsored or paid for, directly or indirectly, by applicants, pre-candidates or various umbrella groups.

For his part, the head of the Electoral Tribunal in Panama, Alfredo Junca, urged residents to condemn “the use of state resources to influence the elections,” in which eight candidates are competing for the presidency of the republic for the period 2024. 2029.

On May 5, Panamanians will choose at the ballot boxes the new president and vice president of the country, 20 deputies in the Central American Parliament and 71 deputies in the National Assembly.

Through voting, they will also elect 81 mayors, 701 town representatives, and 11 council members, with their alternates, for the period from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2029.
