The Russian State Ballet’s performances in several UK theaters were canceled following the invasion of Ukraine.
Wolverhampton Grand Theater said the decision to cancel upcoming shows was “the absolutely right thing in the circumstances” as Russian forces approached the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
It comes after the Royal Opera House announced the cancellation of a tour by the Moscow-based Bolshoi Ballet, which was due to take place in London this summer.
“Discussions and consultations between management, producers and agents have been ongoing since last Thursday,” Wolverhampton Grand Theatre said in a statement.
“The decision to cancel is absolutely the right thing to do under these circumstances, but this will have a significant financial impact on a theater still recovering from the forced closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Wolverhampton Grand Theater is a charitable organization that works exclusively within the entire community, working with everyone.”
He added that all customers who purchased ballet tickets will receive a full refund.
The Theater Royal and Dergate in Northampton, who had been due to perform The Nutcracker for Siberia by the Russian State Ballet, followed up by canceling the show on February 26.
“In view of the situation in Ukraine, Royal & Derngate has taken the decision to cancel today’s performances by the State Russian Ballet Company,” it said in a statement.
The theater apologized for the inconvenience caused and for the short duration of the advertisement, and informed those who purchased tickets that they will receive a full refund.
The Kremlin was also recently robbed of two prestigious events being held in his country.
The Champions League final in May was moved to Paris and the Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix was canceled in September.
Meanwhile, Priti Patel has canceled the visas of the Belarus men’s basketball team, which was due to travel to the United Kingdom to play Great Britain.
The International Basketball Federation announced, on Friday, that the European qualifiers for the World Cup 2023, scheduled for Monday at the Virtu Motors Arena in Newcastle, will not take place due to the “current security situation.”
Belarus aided Russia in the invasion, and allowed its forces to enter Ukraine from the north.
The Home Secretary tweeted on Saturday: “Visas for the Belarusian men’s basketball team scheduled to play in Newcastle tomorrow evening have been cancelled.
“The UK will not welcome national sports teams from those countries who were complicit in Putin’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.”
No new dates have been set for sporting events.
