The United Nations calls for accelerating urban action for a carbon-neutral world

According to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, on this date, the urgent need to improve living conditions came to the fore with the Covid-19 pandemic, which severely affected millions of people in cities.

He noted that access to clean water and sanitation, along with social distancing, are essential responses to the health crisis, but in slums and slums it is difficult to implement such measures.

The owner said that such a situation presents a greater risk of infection, not just within those communities, but in entire cities.

According to United Nations figures, urban centers are responsible for about 70 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, most of which fall on activities such as transportation, buildings, energy and waste management.

Specifically, this year’s World Habitat Day is being held under the theme “Accelerating Urban Action for a Zero Carbon World”.

The idea is to promote activities in which governments, national, regional and local organizations, communities, academic institutions, the private sector and all relevant stakeholders explore how to work together to create inclusive, sustainable and carbon neutral cities and towns.

In particular, it will focus on promoting viable carbon-neutral plans in the run-up to the United Nations climate conference, known as COP26, to be held in November 2021.

Since 1986, the United Nations has observed World Habitat Day on the first Monday in October every year in order to reflect on the state of towns and cities and the fundamental right of everyone to adequate housing.
