Saturday July 2, 2022 – 10:25 UTC

More than fifty naval specialists from the British Overseas Territories, Crown Dependencies and the United Kingdom itself are expected to attend the Falkland Islands for the Red Banner Conference.

The conference, which will cover matters of maritime importance including rules and regulations for various ships, boats and vessels, as well as coastal states’ responsibility with regard to search and rescue and pollution response, will be held at Stanley City Hall between February 4-6.

The conference has the support of the Falkland Islands government, and a red flag will be flown over Victory Meadow for all three days.

Captain John Cox, the Islands Government Maritime Officer and Harbor Manager who will host the meeting, said, “It is very important to the islands government and to all of us, the importance of the marine environment here on the islands as well as internationally, and how we play our role in the Falkland Islands as part of the Red Banner Group.”

The conference, first held 32 years ago, has grown to also include business strategy, politics and security issues.

Since its launch in 1988, it is celebrated every year in different places, reflecting the geography of the Red Pavilion Group which includes, in addition to the United Kingdom, the Crown dependents of Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and the Overseas Territories, Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Saint Helena, and Turks and Caicos Islands.
