The Costa Rican government is looking for a new candidate for the post of Attorney General

On Friday last week, Chaves announced the appointment of Arguides to fill the office of Attorney General, an act subject to its ratification by the Legislative Assembly.

The next day, the newspaper La Nación published racist, homophobic and profane messages from Arguedas, posted on his social networks, and on Sunday the presidential house announced the resignation of its candidate for the high office.

The Presidency Council indicated, without many details, that “in view of the rejection of the candidacy of Mr. Cristian Arguedas Arguedas for the post of Attorney General, the Government of the Republic will announce another candidate once the study and selection process is completed.”

To fill this position, the new official candidate must obtain a relative majority of legislators, ie 50 percent plus one of the votes of the deputies who were in their seats at the time of the vote, and will replace Julio Alberto Jurado, who is retired. Since May 3, 2022.

Jurado was appointed by former President Luis Guillermo Solís (2014-2018) and ratified by the Legislative Assembly on July 7, 2016, with the support of 36 deputies and two votes against.

With the appointment of Arguedas, the government has revealed that it wants the new Attorney General to focus on promoting ethics and transparency in the public service, rehabilitating the purpose and raison d’être of this supreme technical and legal advisory body for public administration and the legal representative of the state.

Likewise, he continues, he will try to become the catalyst for the sound governance of the public administration, as well as coordinating and carrying out all kinds of efforts with the judiciary to reduce the problem of late payment and guarantee, and in this way, fast and urgent. on the population, among other tasks.
