During his official visit to the United Kingdom, South Korean President Yeon Suk-yeol will adopt the “Downing Street Agreement” to mark the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and the United Kingdom.

First, the two countries will work to upgrade bilateral relations, moving from the current “comprehensive and creative partnership” to the “global strategic partnership,” while committing to strengthening cooperation in various fields.

As the presidential office explained, the “Downing Street Agreement” will focus on the common position of both countries on problems on the Korean Peninsula, such as the North Korean nuclear issue, and will address the common will to confront global challenges such as the crisis in Ukraine, the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, and developments in The Middle East.

They will also formalize cooperation in multilateral forums such as the UN Security Council, the G20 and the G7. Likewise, they will enhance security cooperation by signing a “Declaration of Intent on Defense Cooperation” and a “Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Export of Defense Industries.”

Finally, he stressed that improving bilateral relations is necessary to strengthen the strong cooperation that has lasted more than 140 years, and to take a new leap towards future generations.
