Russia is developing a universal vaccine against smallpox

A comprehensive vaccine has been developed for immunoprophylaxis of smallpox, including current strains of monkeypox. Preclinical studies are being conducted on its safety, and studies are being prepared on its efficacy,” the company said.

Similarly, the scientific entity explained that a testing system for the detection of monkeypox is being implemented.

The Director of the Federal Biomedical Agency, Veronika Skvortsova, specified that at this time experts are testing the product and preparing its registration.

On July 12, the Russian National Consumer Protection Office Rospotrebnadzor confirmed the discovery of the first imported case of monkeypox.

The disease was detected in a young man who showed the characteristics and rashes in a medical center after returning from a trip to Europe, the entity reported.

In this regard, the agency stressed that the situation is under strict control and that “the possibility of the disease spreading has stopped thanks to an epidemiological impact that began at the right time.”

According to experts, monkeypox is a rare zoonotic disease, which can be transmitted between animals and humans, with symptoms of fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills and fatigue as well as rashes and blisters on the hands and face.

Transmission occurs through close contact with an infected person, a carrier animal, or contaminated objects.

It was originally recorded from Africa in at least 60 countries with more than 6,000 confirmed cases from January 1 to July 4, 2022, according to the World Health Organization.
