At the opening ceremony, Quito’s Minister of Culture, Juan Martín Cueva, rightly emphasized that the event is part of a series of actions and investments aimed at strengthening the reading habit.

Cuevas explained that the pandemic has also proven the importance of books and that is why we want to strengthen the relationship between the various actors in the literary world, publishers, writers and readers.

He also referred to the programming designed for this occasion, which shows the diversity of criteria and allows for the understanding of multiple realities.

Natalia Enriquez, coordinator of FILQuito 2022, indicated that the event was designed by an organizing committee to entertain different audiences, with priority given to children and youth.

In this regard, Alejandra Correa, Argentinian writer and member of the organizing team, stated that by focusing on new generations, the agenda of activities will encourage discussions about identity, past and present through a broad vision of literary genres.

Under the Quito Live and Read Bicentennial theme, through December 22 there will be book presentations, group readings, literary workshops, and talks with writers, among other activities.

Twenty national writers and 80 guests, as well as fifty publishers, are participating in the meeting, which is housed at the Metropolitan Cultural Center.
