The popular BBC series premiered in 2010 and ran for a total of five seasons, with its final season appearing in 2019. However, the future of the TV series is currently unknown as the British broadcaster did not request a sixth season. Instead, he appears to be interested in developing a feature film to continue the story.

The Luther The film is currently a co-production by 20th Century Fox Television, BBC Worldwide Productions and Chernin Entertainment with Peter Chernin, Julie Gardner, Katherine Pope, Jane Tranter and Elba himself serving as executive producers. Jimmy Pine is on board to direct, having directed the fifth season of the show.
