Felixstowe Port reached a milestone when it became the largest port in the UK to implement 5G technology.

Port of Felixstowe, along with members of the consortium Three UK, Blue Mesh Solutions and the University of Cambridge, has secured a grant application under the 5G Testbeds and Trials Program from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The project aims to test 5G capabilities in a congested port environment.

The initiative seeks to achieve two use cases: predictive maintenance of quay cranes using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and providing communications for remote controlled cranes.

Minister of Digital Infrastructure, Julia LopezHe said: “It is incredible to see that our £200m investment in innovative 5G technology is enabling Britain’s largest and busiest container port to explore new ways to drive efficiency, improve safety and support post-case support to the UK’s Brexit as a global trade nation. “.

He added: “5G has huge potential to revolutionize a wide range of industries in the UK, and 5G ports are just a government-funded test drive to help make that happen.”

Equipment availability is an integral part of port operations. Routine maintenance is a must, but it can restrict equipment availability. The algorithm will increase the amount of time that cranes are used and reduce the cost associated with emergency repairs and daily maintenance.

The 5G network can handle the large volume of data collected which will be used to train the algorithm at levels that would not be sustainable with 4G.

The project is scheduled for completion in September 2022. Work has already been done on the three labs to test the 5G network in these use cases. The increased traffic will now use the network and demonstrate its capabilities to simultaneously manage both use cases and support the vital business activities of the port.
