China conducted live-fire exercises around Taiwan

August 17, 2021, 6:42 a.m.BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Prensa Latina) The Chinese military confirmed today that it has conducted air and sea live-fire exercises in the vicinity of Taiwan to protect national security amid increasing provocations from outside powers.

According to a spokesman for that institution, this is a “necessary measure” that took place in the southwest and southeast of the island, and it also responds to the insistence of some sectors there to seek independence.

He accused the United States and Taipei authorities of threatening peace and stability in the region and warned against continuing military exercises in order to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Since last year, the Chinese armed forces have repeatedly conducted real combat exercises in various maritime areas in order to coordinate and demonstrate their actions by air and under the sea in the event of a possible military conflict.

The Taiwan issue is one of the most sensitive issues in Beijing-Washington relations, and in recent times it has been fueled by US support for the independence aspirations of the Taipei authorities.

The international community passed a resolution by 170 votes in 1971 that considered the People’s Republic of China to be the only legitimate representative of the United Nations and recognized the island as an integral part of that nation.

To move towards the complete reunification of the national territory, Beijing also adheres to the policy of one country, two systems, applied in the administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao.

However, Taipei leaders refuse to accept this situation.
