Belarus withdraws its ambassador to the United Kingdom in response to London sanctions

On Friday, Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesman Anatoly Glaz reported that the country had decided to reduce its diplomatic presence in the UK and withdrew its ambassador, Maxim Yermalovich, in London.

Thus, the Chargé d’Affairs of the Embassy of Belarus on British soil will assume the duties of ambassador after the UK authorities imposed a package of sanctions against Minsk for its involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Belta news newspaper reported. Agency.

Glaz noted that this measure was taken after restrictive measures were imposed against Belarusian employees, companies, and Belarusian media, among others. In addition, he condemned the withdrawal of visas for Belarusian deputies before the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

As he explained, the “restrictive and illegal measures” taken by the British government “do not currently allow the development of an inclusive dialogue”. But he stressed that withdrawing the ambassador does not mean “closing all channels of communication with London.”
