Bankers Investment Trust flat at 148.4p as high ROE and cash pile underpin appeal

The 137-year-old global equity trust trades almost unchanged, but a 24% return on equity and £191.7m of free cash flow keep it on income investors' radars.

Bankers Investment Trust PLC (LSE: BNKR) shares were essentially flat in the latest session, edging down 0.01% to 148.4p, as the veteran global equity trust continues to lean on a strong balance sheet rather than any fresh corporate news to hold investor attention.

The near-static share price masks a year of solid gains: the stock has traded between 122.20p and 154.40p over the past twelve months and sits comfortably above its 200-day moving average of 139.52p, though it has slipped just below its 50-day average of 149.96p, hinting at a possible short-term pause after a strong run.

Founded in 1888 and managed by Henderson Investment Funds Limited alongside Henderson Global Investors Limited, Bankers Investment Trust runs a value-oriented, dividend-focused strategy across large and mid-cap global equities, benchmarked against the FTSE All-Share Index. With a market capitalisation of $1.36 billion, it remains one of the longer-standing names in the UK-listed trust sector.

The headline attraction for many holders is operational efficiency: a return on equity of 24.05% and free cash flow of roughly £191.7 million give the trust considerable financial flexibility, whether to seize new opportunities or support shareholder returns. Its dividend yield of 1.90% is modest, but a low payout ratio of 9.18% suggests the trust is retaining earnings, potentially setting up for future dividend growth rather than maximising current income.

With an RSI of 71.05, the shares are edging towards overbought territory, a signal some technical investors will watch closely for a near-term pullback. There are currently no analyst ratings or price targets covering the trust, meaning investors are largely left to weigh its long track record, conservative payout policy and cash generation against the broader direction of global equity markets in the months ahead.
