The vehicle-testing specialist swoops on a Michigan-based rival to bolster its laboratory testing arm after Middle East disruption dented sales.
AB Dynamics (AIM: ABDP) has struck a deal to acquire eMpulse Test Systems, a Michigan-based maker of advanced automotive testing equipment, for an initial $11.0m (£8.1m) in cash, funded entirely from its own balance sheet on a debt-free, cash-free basis.
The acquisition is designed to reinforce AB Dynamics' laboratory testing business, an area that has recently suffered slower sales as a result of the conflict in the Middle East, with management pointing to strong complementary fit between eMpulse's servoelectric test systems and its own product range.

Beyond the initial consideration, AB Dynamics has earmarked a further $1.8m for working capital and could pay up to $15.0m in contingent consideration over three years should eMpulse hit agreed performance targets. The US firm's three owners are staying on to help drive growth, while AB Dynamics plans to use its global sales network to push eMpulse's equipment into new markets, notably Japan, and cross-sell products to its existing customer base.
eMpulse's own numbers show the volatility that global trade tensions have inflicted on smaller manufacturers: revenue fell to $5.5m in 2025 from $9.3m the year before, a drop the company attributes to disruption from international tariffs. AB Dynamics said trading had since rebounded strongly in the first half of this year.
Management expects the deal to be earnings-accretive from FY27, with the benefits building as cross-selling and geographic expansion take hold. Investors will be watching whether the improved trading momentum at eMpulse can be sustained, and whether AB Dynamics' core lab testing arm can shake off the Middle East-related slowdown that partly prompted the acquisition.
