La Paz, July 21 (Prensa Latina) The president of the state-owned Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), Armin Durgathín, confirmed today that this company is overseeing studies with the aim of expanding the exploration frontier in the Madre de Dios-Lanora Peñana basin.
The businessman said in a corporate newsletter that BGP Inc. China National Petroleum Corporation is implementing this project on the basis of an investment of 47.7 million bolivianos (nearly seven million dollars), including the acquisition of barometric and aeromagnetic data in the field.
“Information obtained quickly, cheaply and on a regional scale will be combined with available geological, geophysical and geochemical data,” Dorgathin said.
In this way, potentially useful structures will be located for identifying areas of hydrocarbon interest, he added.
The official indicated that this initiative is envisaged in the program “Exploration of Aerometric and Aeromagnetic Acquisition of the Plain of Madre de Dios-Penhaña (Phase I)”, stipulated in the Re-Excavation Plan (Geological Assessment of Reserves, Extraction and Final Delivery in refined and purified form) that YPFB is facing.
As reported, the project provides for the acquisition, processing and interpretation of 157 thousand 114.46 km of airborne gravimetric and magnetometric data in an unconventional hydrocarbon region.
The study covers an area of 262 thousand 67.88 square kilometers (25 percent of the country’s area) and includes the provinces of Pando, Beni, Santa Cruz, La Paz and Cochabamba, and data acquisition records progress of more than 15 percent.
He said that all this information will provide the depth and morphology of the basement floor and the composition of the sedimentary material above it, which will contribute to identifying structures and sub-basins that can become areas with exploratory potential.
