Madrid, February 6 (Europe Press) –
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke this afternoon with his counterparts from the United Kingdom, France and Germany about the situation in Russia and Iran as the main topics of the talks at the table.
In a message on Twitter, Blinken cited Burma, Iran and the Coronavirus as “urgent matters” and emphasized that “the transatlantic alliance is essential to solving global challenges.”
The call was attended by British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian.
During the week, Iran issued calls to the European Union to broker a possible return to the nuclear deal with the United States, after the first withdrawal during Donald Trump’s term.
After the sanctions it imposed, Iran returned to enrich uranium and continue its projects, despite the insistence of the other signatories to the agreement to stop the escalation of tension.
The arrival of Biden and Blinken, who were in the White House when the agreement was signed during Barack Obama’s executive presidency, revived the possibility of a return to that agreement, even though neither side has been seated next to the other at the negotiating table for now.
With regard to Russia, Blinken had earlier condemned the expulsion of three European diplomats accused of participating in demonstrations calling for the release of opposition activist Alexei Navalny.
The arrest of the activist unleashed large protests in the Eurasian country, as well as the rejection of the international community.
