Paris, June 17 (EFE). – Two other 101 districts in France have been placed on high alert due to the high temperatures that have hit the country, thus joining the 12 districts that were placed on maximum alert yesterday, with temperatures that will reach 35 degrees in most parts of the country.
The Pyrenees-Atlantic and Hautes-Pyrenees, with its capitals Pau and Tarbes, respectively, have been added to the twelve provinces on the southwest Atlantic coast, according to the notification published by the national weather agency, Mitto France, on Friday.
In addition, there are 56 departments on alert in orange – the second most dangerous – in the Central, Eastern and Parisian regions, which leads to seventy departments on alert for a heat wave that will begin to improve only on Sunday afternoon, since the peak is expected tomorrow Saturday.
This red alert monitoring system, providing maximum mobilization for health centers, dates back to 2004, a year after the historic heat wave in France in the summer of 2003 that caused more than 15,000 deaths in the country.
Orange alerts are more frequent, but it’s the first time a red alert has been activated at this point in June. The precedents occurred in the last days of the month and in July 2019 as well as in August 2020.
The high temperatures prompted the Paris Police Department to announce a special device to try to reduce the emission of pollution on Saturday, thus improving the air quality that has been harmful to health for several days.
For this purpose, the maximum speed is reduced by 20 km on all motorways, national and regional in the region, while in the inner ring of the so-called second end of Paris, only low-pollution vehicles that meet label standards will be able to circulate “Crit’Air”, granted by the government.
Similar measures have also been implemented in Lyon and its suburbs, as well as in the provinces of Hauts-Rhin and Bas-Rhin in the east of the country. Pollution spikes were recorded in the Grand Est, Loire region, Brittany, New Aquitaine, Hauts-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
In Paris, the 34 degrees registered on Friday (38 expected tomorrow) prompted the administration of the Central Institute to close classes and send students home, according to information from the BFMTV chain, because classes exceeded 30 degrees.
Météo-France expects temperatures to reach 40 or 42 degrees this Saturday around Bordeaux and Le Lands. 40 degrees in Loire, Orleans and Paris and up to 39 degrees in Normandy. EFE
