Xi, Sunak hold the first China-UK meeting in five years

Downing Street said that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday during the G20 summit in Indonesia, in the first meeting of the leaders of these countries in five years.

The British government statement said Sunak would urge Xi to maintain a “frank and constructive relationship” between London and Beijing.

“The challenges posed by China are systemic and long-term,” says the text about “the (China) authoritarian leadership’s attempt to reshape the international order.”

He adds that major issues addressed in the G20, such as turmoil in the global economy or food and energy security, cannot be resolved “without concerted action by all major economies in the world” and “including China”.

On his second international trip since the pandemic, Xi Jinping was the most sought-after leader of the G20 leaders’ summit on the Indonesian resort island of Bali.

The communist leader met for three hours with US President Joe Biden, but also held brief meetings with the leaders of France, Argentina, Australia and Spain, among others.
