Using science and humanities to solve city problems

• Rosaura Ruiz Gutierrez gave a lecture entitled “Innovation and Challenges in Education”, organized by Radio Stoneham

During the “Innovation and Challenges in Education” talk, and before the FC workers affiliated with the UNAM (STUNAM) workers union, the doctor in biology stressed that there is no problem that has not been better addressed through scientific, technological and human development; All challenges can be met with knowledge.

“Vaccines were the result of accumulated knowledge. The Consultant of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) also noted that since its creation the current government of Mexico City has emphasized that education is at the core of its work, since it is clearly not possible to transform a country without improving it.

He noted that the work done from 2018 to 2022 at the head of the Secretariat for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation in Mexico City focused on obtaining the support of universities and research centers to solve the city’s problems.

“I advocate this business model. All my life I have advocated that science be taken into account, and that philosophy, and especially ethics, consider as much knowledge as possible to make decisions.”

“We didn’t start from scratch, we have experience in UNAM and other institutions, and we built a team to see what we were going to do and one of them was to unify the Ministry of Education with the Ministry of Science and Technology. These areas are interconnected and here at UNAM we have seen it throughout our lives. It is a space where production is linked,” he added. Similarly, the Constitution of Mexico City’s education, science and technology network, called RED ECOs, is where the main institutions of higher education and research are located in the Mexican capital.

“One of the most important contributions of Claudia Sheinbaum’s government is this collaborative work.” The idea that the government relies on institutions of higher education such as UNAM, the National Polytechnic Institute, the Center for Research and Advanced Studies, El Colegio de México, and the research and teaching centers located in the city come together to help the government with various issues, such as the pandemic, specifically.
