UPCT brings together in Espacio Azul his techniques and knowledge of marine sciences

The Polytechnic of Cartagena is conducting hydroponics and environmental monitoring tests using new research equipment

25. January 2023. – The test tank with profiling buoys for environmental monitoring is the first development of the actions implemented by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena within the framework of the Complementary Plan for Research and Development in Marine Sciences which is coordinated by UPCT blue spacewhich was introduced today.

Thus, UPCT brings together all its technologies and knowledge in marine sciences to “provide solutions to the challenges of sustainability and regeneration facing the seas,” explained the university’s president, Beatriz Miguel.

Researchers from all UPCT educational centers are participating in three action axes focused on environmental monitoring, sustainable aquaculture and the blue economy, which seek to impart knowledge to the productive sector related to the sea and raise awareness in society about the protection needed for it.

With next generation EU funding through the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the regional governments of seven autonomous communities, the Marine Science Supplementary Scheme, called ThinkinAzul, It has a budget of 54 million euros and is coordinated from the region of Murcia.

million euros corresponds to UPCT, which will invest in research equipment such as a new boat, an autonomous underwater vehicle, an aquaponic pilot plant where vegetable and shellfish farms will be integrated, and a test tank for Water quality buoys.

“The initial capital to apply will be for European projects, combining the knowledge of our different research groups related to the sea,” says Catalina Egea, Vice-Chancellor for Research.

“Espacio Azul is open to businesses and the community to help change towards environmental, economic, social and governance sustainability,” explains the person in charge of this initiative, Francisco López Castejon. Espacio Azul’s office is located on the CIM Campus.
