UNAM promotes new frontier knowledge in space matters

• On the International Day of Manned Spaceflight, Alejandro Farah Simon highlights the long history of the National University in the development of science and technology

According to the expert, these expeditions are of paramount importance due to a destination, not far, for being inevitable to leave our planet at some point, and because of human need.

Regarding the celebration of the International Manned Spaceflight Day, which is celebrated on April 12, the member of the Instrumentation Department of the Institute of Astronomy also stated that although the Earth still has enough time to live, it means that it is not necessary to go out into space to give it up . However, since it is quite complex, you must prepare. and say:

“It turns out that in our surroundings, in our solar neighborhood, there are bodies that have natural resources that we can benefit from in a very important way, and that means not only sending robots, but also travelers who can make decisions more consciously about this kind of resources, whether it’s on the moon.” Or on satellites orbiting our sun, or on asteroids and meteorites, and even on Mars.

This is the importance of these manned spaceflights as it will allow for a better use of natural resources on Earth. For this reason, today it cannot be seen as the goal of a single nation, but can be elicited globally.

This includes countries that have technological development coming out, and those that are deploying it, such as in Mexico, where all contributions to science are of significant value, he points out.

UNAM has a long history of developing space science and technology, for example the laboratory in the cosmic ray wing, located at Ciudad Universitaria, is a pioneer in the study of this issue, says Farah Simon.

In addition to the various institutional and academic efforts that have led the National University, so far, to be the only entity in our country that has succeeded in designing and putting into orbit the satellite: UNAMSAT. Now at PEU, the job is to bring these science and technology projects together to make them work in a more consistent way.

We have successfully brought together 50 projects in the field, each directed at different topics: from space medicine, nanosatellites, to space psychology and space law, with the integration of specialists from high-level space agencies from Japan, the United States and others. Europe countries.

UNAM not only collaborates, but also promotes the new knowledge of frontiers, as its own initiative. It is also true that our country, due to the presence of the Mexican Space Agency, is promoting cooperation between several countries to quickly place Mexico in related projects, for example the COLMENA project, directed by Gustavo Medina Tanco, of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences, where if all goes well Alright in 2024 their small robots will touch the moon, ”he assures.

The beginning of the space age

April 12 is the day when the event of the first manned spaceflight, carried out by the Russian Yuri Gagarin in 1961, is celebrated. The date was set as a precedent by the United Nations and identified as the beginning of the space age.

The event also wants to reaffirm that global science and technology contribute, in a decisive way, to achieving the goals of sustainable development and increasing the well-being of countries and peoples. In addition to raising awareness in the world to ensure the realization of the aspiration to allocate outer space for peaceful purposes.
