UN passes resolution holding Russia responsible for crisis in Ukraine; Cuba abstains from voting

The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution Thursday blaming Russia for the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and calling for an immediate ceasefire and protection for the millions of civilians trapped in the conflict, as well as homes, schools and hospitals. Survival.

Thursday’s vote on the resolution was 140 to 5, with only Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Eritrea joining Russia against the measure. 38 countries abstained, including Cuba and China.

The resolution denounces the “severe humanitarian consequences” of Russia’s aggression, which it noted “on a scale not seen by the international community in Europe in decades.” He deplored Russia’s use of artillery and air strikes and “sieges” against densely populated cities, including Mariupol – in southern Ukraine – and demanded full access for humanitarian aid, reports the Associated Press.

The result of the vote was similar to the March 2 resolution adopted by the council to demand an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of troops from Russia. He also called for the protection of the entire civilian population and the infrastructure necessary for its survival. This vote ended with 141 votes in favour, five against and 35 abstentions (including Cuba).

Russia has condemned the decision as “anti-Russian” and accuses those who support it of not really worrying about the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and only seeking to politicize aid.

The vote comes after the UN Security Council overwhelmingly defeated a Russian resolution on Wednesday that recognized Ukraine’s growing humanitarian needs but made no mention of the Russian invasion.
