UK yearns for Boris Johnson’s return after Liz Truss’ political failure

Truss, UK Prime Minister and the new chancellor, continued to gain weight with reforms.

Beleaguered British Prime Minister Liz Truss faces a growing parliamentary rebellion if she is forced to abandon a key commitment in the Conservative manifesto on pensions as part of a frantic austerity drive. Treasurer Jeremy Hunt has refused to guarantee that he will honor the Conservative election’s promise to raise the state pension in line with the higher level of inflation and wages or 2.5%, known as the “triple lock”.

The pension uncertainty comes as the Treasury has asked government departments to find savings of up to 15% of their budgets, with no options out for discussion, in what is effectively a return to austerity. It poses a new political problem for Truss and Hunt, with many Conservative MPs representing a large number of older voters who often make up their primary voting base.
