UCM adds a new doctoral degree to its accredited postgraduate offer

Taught by the College of Basic Sciences on campus, the Ph.D. in Mathematics Education has a four-year quality certification.

The quality certification awarded by the National Accreditation Commission (CNA) extends the PhD in Mathematics Education, taught by the Faculty of Basic Sciences of the Catholic University of Maule (UCM), until 2026. This is the first certification awarded to a postgraduate course, created before four years.

โ€œThe accreditation of the program fills us with joy, because it is recognition of the quality of the program and the academics that make up the faculty, and the achievement of this, placing our faculty and the university on a competitive level comparable to that of the aforementioned Faculty Dean, Dr. Victor Hugo Monzon,โ€ said the Dean of the aforementioned Faculty, Dr.

For its PhD director, Dr. Maria Aravena-Diaz, the degree responds to the solid training offered by a postgraduate course.

“Our Ph.D. is small, so four years of accreditation is quite an achievement. We’re two years out of the pandemic and we have a graduate, but it’s a first-rate program, very strong in terms of advanced human capital training. The value of these achievements makes us very happy,” he said.

The Doctorate in Mathematics Education corresponds to the ninth graduate degree that UCM has been able to accredit. Just last month, CNA earned her five-year Ph.D. in Applied Mathematical Modeling, which is taught by the same unit.

โ€œThe College of Basic Sciences has done its best and followed all institutional guidelines for this recognition, and the Foundation in turn has provided the necessary support not only for the Doctorate in Teaching, but also for the Doctorate in Mathematical Modeling and the Master of Science in Experimental Science Education. We have already accredited three of the five programs offered by the College, Which talks about inclusion,โ€ noted the Campus Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Karina Vilches.

The authority stated that the Ph.D. in Mathematics Education – whose research lines include problem solving and mathematical modeling, teacher training and the development of mathematical thought – brings together experience and youth in the same team.

โ€œBasic sciences have pioneered the creation of these programmes, and CNA has come to recognize the path of this group of researchers who have been advancing the discipline for many years; academics who have pioneered and continue to contribute to the programmes. The PhD Director has a proven track record nationally and internationally and a young team of highly motivated researchers Strong training.โ€ We are very proud.โ€
