San Salvador, May 2. The Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front confirmed today that El Salvador is experiencing a de facto coup, after the dismissal of the Constitutional Court judges.

The leftist Salvadoran formation described the decision of the ruling majority in the Legislative Council to dismiss the aforementioned judges as “an explicit and blatant interference in the other state apparatus.”

With regard to the front, the aforementioned decision “constitutes an explicit and clear intention to gain absolute control over the state’s powers, and to place them all at the service of those who exercise executive power.”

In its statement, the FMLN described this initiative as a “coup against a fledgling democracy”, carried out by legislative means and in violation of the basic and constitutional rules in force since the 1992 Peace Accords.

Faced with this situation, the Front called on the international community to denounce the situation and defend democratic freedoms that are violated by a powerful group, and the text adds that it threatens the norms of peaceful coexistence.

The ruling New Ideas Party and its ally, the Grand Alliance for National Unity, won enough seats in the February elections to render the parliamentary opposition irrelevant.

The President of the Republic, Neb Bokil, defended the first measures taken by the current Legislative Council, stressing that they meet the will of the people expressed at the ballot box. (Text and image: PL)
