The World Cup for Artistic Gymnastics scheduled for May in Tokyo has been canceled

Tokyo, March 9 (EFE). – The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) announced today the cancellation of the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup that was scheduled to be held on May 4 in Tokyo, which was a test for the Olympic Games of Japan, the capital.

The international organization said in a statement that the decision was taken by FIFA and the Japanese Federation, “in view of the current travel restrictions and difficulties around the world and the measures taken by the Japanese authorities to reduce the infection with the Coronavirus in the country before the games.” .

In making the decision, it was also taken into account that after the World Cup was canceled in Stuttgart (Germany) and Birmingham (UK), FIFA has already removed the trophy circuit from the list of qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games.

FIFA continues to “work closely with the Organizing Committee of the Tokyo 2020 Games” to prepare for the Olympic event. The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee said in a separate statement that the World Cup will now be replaced by another nationwide competition as logistical preparation for the Games.

Tokyo 2020 officials also affirmed their commitment to organizing “safe games in cooperation with all concerned parties”.

The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to open on July 23, after being postponed by a year from their original date due to the epidemic.
