The UK supports Colombia’s Equitable Energy Transition Roadmap

During his recent visit to Colombia, the British Government Adviser, James Claverley, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to promoting a fair energy transition in the country by ‘adending’ support to the Fair Energy Transition Roadmap and the process for Colombia’s accession to the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA).

During today’s follow-up meeting, UK Ambassador George Hodgson and Minister Irene Vélez-Torres presented the new proposal for cooperation between the two governments for the energy sector in Colombia through the “secondment” British cooperation mechanism, which will make available for a year a “second” expert to provide technical support for the planning and implementation of the energy transition roadmap fair.

“The Colombian mining and energy sector is already a beneficiary of British collaboration through the UK Partnership Program for Accelerated Climate Transformations (UKPACT) and the UK Sustainable Infrastructure Program (UKSIP), in areas such as smart grids, sustainable and affordable energy solutions for electrifying rural areas, and electric mobility, climate change, hydrogen and offshore wind, said Minister Velez.

“Of course, this new support leads us further towards achieving the goals set for the four-year government of President Gustavo Petro,” he stressed.

The “borrowed” expert’s work will focus on developing a financing plan for a just energy transition, strategies to mitigate the climate impact of transition and industrial decarbonisation; structuring the financial mechanisms for a just energy transition and supporting the Department of Energy’s “Early Retirement for Carbon Electricas” program, Ambassador Hodgson stated.

In addition, from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, we have reaffirmed Colombia’s commitment to climate action to transform power generation from coal to clean energy, by joining the “Ex-Coal Energy Alliance-PPCA”.
