The Science Park studies strategies for enhancing citizens’ scientific culture

The Science Park is committed to research and development and encourages a range of specialized studies in education and publishing to implement innovative strategies that enhance the scientific culture of citizens. Knowledge generation is the goal of this new field in which the museum complex will address topics of social importance such as inclusive science, gender equality in science, education for sustainability or the human dimension of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. .

It is precisely in this last area that the focus is on one of the main research currently being carried out and the results of which will be presented this week at the 13th Campus Gutenberg Conference on Scholarly Communication and Publishing under the title “Exhibitions as a Channel for Artificial Intelligence Dissemination”. The work, led by Science Park Director Luis Alcalá, assessed the impact of museums and exhibitions on pre-university youth’s AI knowledge.

Inequality in artificial intelligence

One of the main conclusions of this project is the positive impact of visiting these informal education spaces in enhancing moral awareness among young people about inequalities (generational, gender, race, origin, economics) which enhances AI. To this end, a field study was conducted whose subject of analysis was the assessment of the knowledge about artificial intelligence acquired by nearly a thousand students who participated during the months of May and June 2023 in the “Computational Thinking” visit to the exhibition. “Artificial Intelligence. An Exhibition on People, Data and Control” at the Science Park.

The scientific team that conducted the research consists of experts in pedagogy and computer science from the University of Granada – professors Fátima Poza, Elba Gutiérrez Satiusti, Rosanna Montes and Daniel Molina – and in the scientific education and publishing of the Science Park – the same director Luis Alcalá, Lourdes López and Juan Antonio Torres—. The multidisciplinary nature of the team will make it possible to formulate recommendations and good practices based on the scientific results obtained. This will promote the implementation of innovative strategies to enhance AI literacy and critical thinking among pre-university youth.

Through this line of innovative work in the field of science museology, the Science Oasis aims to contribute to the design of educational and publishing programs and activities based on scientific evidence.

The Gothenburg Campus, which dedicates the 2023 edition to artificial intelligence, brings together specialists and researchers in the field of scientific publishing from all over the country in Barcelona for two days. It is organized by the “la Caixa” Foundation, the Center for Science, Communication and Community Studies of the Pompeu Fabra University (CCS-UPF) and the Pompeu Fabra University – Barcelona School of Management (UPF-BSM).
