The pandemic has brought back traditional medicine – El Sol de Tulancingo

The epidemic caused by the Covid-19 virus has revived indigenous medicine in the Otomí-Tepehua region, as a way to treat itself holistically, with herbs being another element of the worldview, as stated by the representative of traditional medicine in the region. Vargas Martinez.

He noted that about 75 percent of the population has turned to alternative therapies to treat the virus, especially from indigenous communities that do not have access to basic health services.

He pointed out that this practice takes a more holistic view, and strives to restore the healthy relationship of the human being, as well as to diagnose and prevent disease.

He stressed that one of the advantages of this discipline is that it is within the pockets of patients, and has no side effects, as it generates positive effects on the emotional level.

He explained that people have two kinds of diseases, one mystical, which are those that cannot be detected by a clinical study, “such as the disease of love, misfortune, harmony in the house, in short”, and they also treat common diseases. Such as colitis, gastritis, multiple sclerosis and others.

He shared that ailments are treated on the basis of plants with healing properties, massages, temazcal, mushrooms, powders, teas, ointments, ointments, spiritual antiseptics, “everything that is alternative medicine.”

“There is no guideline for most of the treatments we offer, because every traditional doctor treats discomfort according to his own means, capabilities, knowledge, and knowledge of his ancestors,” he explained.

He argued that traditional physicians had spiritual gifts passed down from lineage, inheritance, and dreams, and lamented that many people describe them as witches, eccentrics, and insane, because they apply remedial procedures that not everyone uses.

He added that in four municipalities of Otome Tibihua district, an invitation has been opened for them to participate in training related to obstetrics, hospital care, first aid and symptoms.

“The importance lies in the certification and formalization of the traditional medicine trade, that is, they can be qualified and trained, as well as accredited by health institutions, to give certainty to people attending ancestral healing processes,” he said.

Finally, he asserted, more and more treatments are gaining strength thanks to the fact that they have been trained and approved, but also because people have lost their “belief” in allopathic medicine.
