Severe Russia Sanctions Make European Stock Markets Down 2%

Feb 28 (Reuters) – European shares tumbled on Monday after Western countries imposed tough new sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, while rising oil prices fueled fears of hyperinflation.

At 0810 GMT, the European Stoxx 600 was down 2.1%. Germany’s DAX fell 2.0%, while Britain’s FTSE 100 was down 0.9%.

Oil jumped nearly 5%, while the Russian ruble fell nearly 30% to a record low, after Western countries imposed sanctions that include blocking major Russian banks from the global payment system SWIFT.

European banks with the most exposure to Russia, such as Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank, Italy’s UniCredit and France’s Societe Generale, fell between 6.3% and 15.8%, while the index of banks in the broader eurozone fell 5.2%.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has put Russia’s nuclear deterrent on high alert in the face of a barrage of Western retaliation, escalating international tension.

Goldman Sachs forecast European inflation to rise sharply to 5% in 2022 and said the Ukraine crisis could subtract as much as 0.4% of eurozone GDP this year.

London-listed BP fell 4.1 percent after Russia’s largest foreign investor said it was giving up its stake in state oil company Rosneft at a cost of up to $25 billion.

Shares of Renault, which controls the Russian automaker AvtoVAZ, fell 6.9 percent.

Defense company Rheinmetall jumped 43 percent after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday that his country would sharply increase its defense spending to more than 2 percent of its economic output.
