Panama expresses its solidarity with Ecuador after a strong earthquake

According to a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which also mourns the loss of life due to the tragedy, it has been determined that the embassy of the isthmus country in Quito maintains contact with Panamanians residing in that country.

The quake had jolted a coastal area of ​​Ecuador the day before and was also felt in northern Peru.

The government of Ecuador declared a state of emergency in the province of Azuay on Sunday after the earthquake, which measured 6.5 on the Richter scale and caused 13 landslides in that region.

According to the Geophysical Institute, the epicenter was in Guayas and it had characteristics called an earthquake.

Seismologist Pablo Palacios confirmed that the Tellurian action was deep (about 44 kilometers), in an area where earthquakes of this type had already occurred.

Ecuador reported at least 180 homes damaged, 84 destroyed, 80 education units destroyed, as well as 22 public assets and 32 private assets, 33 health centers as well as five bridges.

This South American country is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which concentrates some of the world’s most important subduction zones (collapse of tectonic plates) and is the scene of strong seismic activity.

In addition to Ecuador, the belt, which looks like a horseshoe, includes other countries such as Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
