Santo Domingo, February 23 (.). – Overall monetary poverty decreased by 2.1 percentage points in the Dominican Republic in 2022 compared to the previous year to 21.8% compared to 23.9 in 2021, said Pavel, Minister of Economy, Planning and Development. Issa Contreras.

According to a note from his ministry issued this Thursday, the good performance of the Dominican economy last year and the increase in employment, despite the inflationary scenario, allowed the number of individuals and families to be in a state of general monetary poverty (per capita income from an expenditure unit is insufficient to purchase a basket of food and non-food commodities) .

“This decrease in monetary poverty levels was – in addition to this – the result of the strong verified increase in employment and labor income of people due to the remarkable economic growth and the effect of the increase in government cash transfers to families poor or vulnerable through Supérate”, the government’s social protection scheme.

According to the estimates of the Technical Inter-Institutional Committee for the Measurement of Poverty, the year 2022 closed with a general monetary poverty level of 21.8%, which allowed 198 thousand Dominicans to overcome this situation and be able to obtain “a basket of goods and services that allow them to live in dignity.”

Particularly good behavior was recorded in the last quarter of the year, when the rate reached 19.6%, the note said, which was “the lowest rate ever observed in the country.”

The nominal per capita income of Dominican households in 2022 increased by 10.2% and the real by 1.5%.

In addition, the recovery in employment led to a growth in nominal employment income of 8.7%.

According to the technical committee, the overall monetary poverty reduction would have increased by 3.6 percentage points in 2022, had it not been for the annual inflation of 7.8%.
